Crisis competence with resilience

Whether stress, illness or crises: sooner or later no one is immune from them. But everyone deals with it differently. Those who are mentally "armed" find it easier to regain their balance.

Mental resistance (resilience) makes it easier to withstand negative influences and to develop further in the course of life without becoming mentally ill.

What makes people resilient?

Resilience and what is known as coping are two important resources that help to deal with stressful situations. Researchers have been dealing with the issues of resilience and salutogenesis for some time. And ask the question in the room: Which circumstances contribute to staying mentally healthy despite many adversities? Individual factors (e.g. genetic makeup, physical health / illness, age, life history, personality traits) as well as the social environment (e.g. family, culture), general environmental factors (e.g. prosperity, security) and relevant life events play a key role.

Resilience research identifies a number of criteria that strengthen people psychologically so that they can also cope with bad events or stressful living conditions. These include, for example, hope, independence, independence, determination, insight, humor and courage. Resilient people have a strong confidence in themselves. In addition, they do not see it as a weakness to seek help. Resilience is an important protective factor that can also cushion the negative effects of childhood stress. It is also helpful to be able to better "master" physical illnesses.

Note Don't hesitate to seek professional help if you have emotional or physical complaints. The earlier the better. You will find numerous contact points under When the psyche needs help and under health search (doctor search and much more).

The pillars of resilience

Important cornerstones of resilience are:

  • acceptance
  • optimism
  • Self-efficacy (trust in one's own ability to act)
  • bear responsibility
  • Networking (actively building and expanding a network of relationships)
  • Future planning
  • Orientation towards solutions

However, being resilient does not mean facing life with a smile all the time. The conscious handling of different emotions (whether joy, anger or sadness) is part of a healthy soul life.

Can you strengthen your mental resistance?

Everyone has resilient parts in them. It is also possible to improve these or to learn skills in order to be able to deal more easily with difficult life situations. High-quality coaching, targeted resilience training, clinical-psychological counseling, health psychological counseling or psychotherapy can help. Studies show that less resilient versus very resilient people particularly benefit from resilience-promoting measures.

Everyone also has the opportunity to strengthen and train their own psychological resilience. For tips on how to increase resilience, see How to strengthen your psyche. But nobody has leased resilience for life. Sometimes it has to be “worked out” anew, for example after severe crises or emotional trauma. Mental health is like physical health: it needs to be constantly looked after and maintained.

EU project on resilience

An EU project on the subject of resilience was launched on the initiative of the Blickpunkt Identity association, funded by the Healthy Austria Fund and coordinated by the Blickpunkt Identity association with project partner Meduni Vienna. Individuals or groups should discover, develop and use their mental resilience. Above all, multipliers should be supported in their work (primarily in adult education or organizational development, but also, for example, (health psychologists or psychotherapists). Various downloads are available on the internet platform www.resilience-project.eu.

Tip Using a specially developed online game, everyone can also playfully acquire resilience know-how.
