The nursing assistant professions support qualified nursing staff and doctors in looking after people in need of care. They are responsible for support in nursing as well as for cooperation in therapy and diagnosis.

Tasks and areas of activity

The tasks of the care assistant in the context of care include in particular:

  • Implementation of basic techniques of care and mobilization,
  • Personal hygiene and nutrition,
  • Patient observation,
  • prophylactic care measures,
  • Documentation of the maintenance measures carried out and
  • Maintenance, cleaning and disinfection of aids.

In the context of cooperation in therapy and diagnosis, the following activities may be carried out in individual cases, following a written medical order and under the supervision of qualified nurses or doctors:

  • Administration of drugs,
  • Application of bandages and bandages,
  • Administration of subcutaneous insulin injections and subcutaneous injections of anticoagulant drugs
  • standardized blood, urine and stool examinations as well as blood sampling from the capillary as part of near-patient laboratory diagnostics and implementation of rapid test procedures,
  • Taking blood from the vein, except in children
  • Performing tube feeding with gastric tubes lying down,
  • Collecting and monitoring basic medical data (e.g. measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight and observing the state of consciousness or breathing) and
  • simple heat and light applications.

The nursing assistant has an extended area of ​​activity: In addition to participating in diagnostics and therapy, they are allowed to perform the following activities in individual cases after a written doctor's order:

  • Implementation of standardized diagnostic programs, such as ECG, EEG, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), lung function test,
  • Insertion and removal of nasal and transoral feeding tubes,
  • Insertion and removal of transurethral catheters in women, with the exception of

    children

  • Connection and connection of ongoing infusions, with the exception of cytostatics and transfusions with whole blood and / or blood components, with the peripheral venous vascular access in place, maintaining its patency and, if necessary, removing it,
  • Putting on corsets, orthoses and electrically operated movement splints

    according to the specified setting.

Where do the nursing assistant professions work?

The nursing assistant works exclusively within the framework of an employment relationship, e.g. in hospitals, in nursing homes, in facilities for the disabled, in retirement homes, in rehabilitation facilities, in organizations of home nursing and care at home, in medical ordinations or with members of the high-level service for health and nursing (qualified nurses) who work as freelancers.

Solid education

Nursing assistant

The training to become a nursing assistant takes place at a school for health and nursing or in a course for nursing assistance and lasts one year with a full-time training with a scope of 1,600 hours. The training is also possible in the form of part-time training, in connection with another training or as part of an employment relationship. The training is completed with a final examination before a committee (certificate).

Nursing assistant

The training as a nursing assistant takes place at a school for health and nursing and lasts two years with full-time training with a scope of 3,200 hours or correspondingly shorter with previous training as a nursing assistant. The training is also possible in the form of part-time training, in connection with another training or as part of an employment relationship. The training is completed with a final examination (diploma) before a committee.

In order to be constantly up to date, members of the nursing assistant professions must receive regular further training. There is also further training to expand and deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in the training. These include, for example, home nursing, palliative care, care for dementia, etc.

The mandatory registration for nursing assistant professions in the health professions register has been in effect since July 2018.

How are the costs going to be covered?

In the hospital

If you are looked after by members of the nursing assistant professions while you are in hospital, the costs are covered by your health insurance provider. For more information, see Hospitalization.

In home nursing

As part of home nursing, the nursing assistant professions focus on basic care, body care, mobilization, nutrition and nursing prophylaxis. If the nursing assistance is carried out under the supervision of qualified nursing staff, the costs are covered by health insurance providers. Federal states and / or municipalities or municipalities grant grants. The actual funding varies depending on the federal state; the social department of your state government can provide you with specific information.
