Adolescence is about many physical developments, but growing up is also about processing changes, discovering previously unfamiliar emotions and thoughts, learning to deal with them and finally finding your own identity. Emotional and social changes during puberty can manifest themselves in other behavior, decreased performance, mood swings, and fatigue. The background to these changes is, for example, new connections between nerve cells in the brain and the influence of hormones.

In addition to difficulties in communicating with parents, in school and / or with friends, teenagers have to learn to deal with changes in their bodies and with a new body feeling. The feeling of being left alone, lonely and not being understood is also part of this development phase. It is opposed to the need to want to belong and to get recognition, which is also very important in this phase of life.

Is my body beautiful, slim, manly enough?

Am i beautiful enough Is my breast too small, are my hips too wide? Do you like me without a washboard stomach? And: is my penis big enough? The physical changes during puberty are unusual and can be unsettling. Everyone has a unique, unique body with “chocolate sides”, but also with rough edges. All together make up the overall picture of a person. People who can accept their bodies, feel good about their skin and thus appear harmonious often have a good self-esteem and good charisma. Because they get along with themselves, they are attractive to others. People who go through life in a good mood, have a sense of humor with which to laugh and have interesting conversations are also attractive to many.

Tip When looking in the mirror, concentrate on what you think is beautiful. And not just on what bothers you.

Advertising and film are not the reality

Big breasts, long legs or a washboard stomach may look good on an advertising poster, but they are not the only things that make an attractive person. Pictures can be changed - most of the pictures you see on posters, in magazines or in advertising have been digitally post-processed. The legs are made longer and narrower, for example, fat pads and abdominal attachment disappear on the PC. Stars can be put in the right light in the film with make-up, light effects and much more. Because they are not perfect either.

Cosmetic surgery or not?

At first glance, cosmetic surgery is a simple solution. But even they certainly cannot solve all problems. They usually represent major interventions in the body, which can also have undesirable effects.

During puberty, the body changes. This is unusual, but also a chance to find your own style - that makes you authentic and satisfied, which is also often best. That is why it is sometimes advisable to simply give yourself and your body some time.

Those who suffer a lot from their appearance should, however, talk about it, for example with good friends, or get advice and help from experts, for example at a youth counseling center. It can be useful to talk to a doctor. So you can think together about how to proceed. Under no circumstances should illegal preparations (often from the Internet) be used, for example to build muscle mass or to go on a diet. These can lead to serious damage to health.

Tip You can also get a better body feeling through healthy exercise.

Unilateral diets and starvation diets do not beautify the body. On the contrary: They damage the body and usually lead to more pounds than before. Those who want to stay slim or lose weight in the long term are better off eating a healthy, balanced diet.

Help with eating disorders

Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa (anorexia), bulimia nervosa (eating and vomiting addiction) and binge eating disorder (BED), which often affect young women and girls, but not only. Eating disorders also occur in boys. Disturbed eating behavior is characterized, for example, by binge eating, self-induced vomiting and excessive dieting. The eating disorders are serious illnesses and must be clarified and treated by a doctor.

Mood lows & depression

In a bad mood and then in a good mood, sudden crying fit and high mood. Mood swings are, to some extent, part of puberty. Upsetches can occur, small sags are normal. Often times, for example, a sense of achievement can lift the mood again, or things that one enjoy doing that improve one's mood. Those who can deal well with disappointments usually manage to see the good things in life again even after defeat.

However, depression can also develop during puberty. When depression begins is often difficult to tell. In any case, if someone is feeling very bad mentally, it is better to get advice and help. Talking about it with friends, parents or other people you trust can often be a relief. Experts, for example at a youth counseling center, are very familiar with various problems young people face. If you have depression, however, medical help is also necessary.

Aggression & Violence

Sometimes you cannot find words to express feelings, for example when you are very angry or hurt. Such moments can occur more frequently during puberty. However, striking is not a good solution. Violence doesn't get anything right. On the contrary: violence can have far-reaching consequences.

Tip Exercise is a good way of dealing with aggression, for example.

Those who have difficulty in controlling their emotions or who have no control at all or who are themselves victims of acts of violence do not simply have to accept this.
