Personality Disorders: What Is It?

People with a personality disorder often differ significantly in their behavioral patterns from the behavior of the people in their environment, for example in terms of emotional expression, interpersonal communication or relationship building. It is usually very difficult for them to make independent changes, which can have a negative impact on their interpersonal relationships.

Personality disorders are not diseases in the sense of a biological cause and are therefore not always treated medically. Nevertheless, they can cause severe suffering and often require treatment.

How do personality disorders occur?

The development of personality disorders can be traced back to the interaction of various factors. Genetic influences (“hereditary factors”) and negative experiences in early childhood (eg upbringing and development problems, experiences of violence, sexual abuse, trauma, neglect) in combination lead to the development of a personality disorder.

Traumatic experiences, especially in later childhood and early adolescence, can encounter an existing vulnerability and thus promote the development of a personality disorder. In other words: If the prerequisites are created in early childhood, the susceptibility increases - but it does not necessarily have to lead to the development of a personality disorder. As a result, a fateful cycle is set in motion. People with a corresponding personality get into conflict with their surroundings, and when their fellow human beings react to this, they often intensify the suffering of those affected, who in turn have a problematic effect on their surroundings.

The behavior of adolescents, for example, can very easily be confused with the symptoms of a personality disorder - only an examination and diagnosis by experts can clarify this.

In the end, several factors are likely to interact individually and thus promote the development of a personality disorder. Psychological resistance (resilience) also plays a role. Experiences of interpersonal relationships are very important.

When is a personality disorder present?

Personality disorders can cause massive suffering, affect lifestyle as much as illnesses, and are therefore to a large extent in need of treatment by appropriately trained specialists (e.g. psychiatrist, psychotherapist). People with a personality disorder do not always feel stress themselves. Sometimes they even feel quite well and attribute problems to their surroundings.

There are different forms of personality disorders that have more or less characteristic features. They serve as a guide, but they do not have to be present. You will find a list of the most common forms under personality disorders at a glance.

The boundary to the personality styles of the same name, which have similar distinctive features - but less pronounced - is often blurred. Some people may recognize themselves or a person in the family / circle of friends in it - but that does not mean that there must be a personality disorder. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to seek advice and help in order to rule out other disorders / illnesses or to be able to deal better with the respective situations. There is a need for action, especially when those affected or the environment are under pressure.
