From lifestyle to genetic makeup

Factors that have been shown to increase your risk of stomach cancer include

  • Diet: Eating habits play an important role in the development of stomach cancer. Frequent consumption of heavily salted, cured or smoked food (high nitrate content) and grilled food (carcinogens), further spoiled, especially moldy food (aflatoxins) and low consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables are harmful.   • Smoking: Carcinogenic substances in smoke dissolve in the saliva and thus get into the stomach. More about quitting smoking.
  • Infections: The colonization of the gastric mucosa with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori can lead to inflammation (gastritis) and ulcers and as a result to stomach cancer.
  • Pre-existing gastric diseases: The risk of gastric cancer is increased, for example, after chronic gastritis, chronic gastric ulcer, polyps, vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia) as a result of autoimmune gastritis and gastric operations that have occurred some time ago.
  • Genetic predisposition: The risk of the disease is increased if a family member (e.g. parents, siblings) is already suffering from gastric cancer.

Preventive behavioral measures

Everyone can reduce their risk of stomach cancer by avoiding certain lifestyle factors. In particular, the following behavioral measures are recommended:

  • Balanced diet: Above all, strongly salted, cured, smoked and grilled dishes, and spoiled food (especially moldy bread) should be avoided. In return, there should be plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables on the menu.
  • Do not smoke: Smokers have an approximately three-fold increased risk of developing stomach cancer.

Uncharacteristic complaints

In the beginning, gastric cancer causes no or uncharacteristic symptoms. Often these are neglected or dismissed as supposed food intolerances. The following signs can indicate gastric cancer, but they can also have harmless causes:

  • "Sensitive stomach", often with a pronounced aversion to different foods (e.g. meat and sausage products),
  • new intolerance, e.g. to coffee, fruit and alcohol,
  • Sensation of pressure / fullness (often after just a few bites) and pain in the upper abdomen,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Nausea, belching, nausea and vomiting,
  • unwanted weight loss,
  • Decreased performance and weakness,
  • Anemia (anemia)
  • Difficulties swallowing,
  • Vomiting blood and tarry stools (black, sticky, foul-smelling stool that looks like tar)
  • Formation of ascites.
