How is the female condom used correctly?

The Femidom is available in a standard size. At 17 centimeters, it is roughly the size of a used condom, but twice as wide at 7.5 centimeters. The femidome has a flexible ring at both ends. The smaller ring is inserted into the vagina and covers the cervix. The larger ring remains outside the vaginal entrance. The female condom can be inserted into the vagina while standing, lying down or sitting. Like the condom, it can only be used once.

When used correctly, the reliability of the femidome corresponds to that of the condom (Pearl Index 2–12).

Advantages and disadvantages of the femidoma

The Femidom is a contraceptive device for women that, like the condom for men, can only be used once. It is the only method of contraception that a woman can use to protect herself from sexually transmitted infections.

  • Simultaneous protection against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
  • It can be introduced before intercourse.
  • The Femidom can be used during breastfeeding.
  • The female condom does not interfere with the body: side effects are currently not known.

The disadvantages
