In addition, the preparation of the operating room with regard to the necessary non-sterile equipment and storage aids, including their maintenance and checking for functionality, is the responsibility of the surgical assistant.

Tasks and work areas

The surgical assistant includes assistance in performing surgical interventions as directed and under the supervision of a doctor, if necessary also by qualified health and nursing staff.

The area of ​​activity of the surgical assistant includes above all:

  • Acceptance, identification and preparation of patients who will be operated on (including transport to and from the site),
  • Assistance in positioning the patient,
  • Preparation of the operating room with regard to the necessary non-sterile devices and storage aids, including their maintenance and checking for functionality
  • Operation of non-sterile devices during an operation,
  • Assistance with the sterilization of devices and instruments,
  • Reprocessing and functional control of unsterile devices and
  • Assistance in the implementation of the hygiene guidelines with regard to the operating room, the devices and the instruments.

Where do surgical assistants work?

Surgical assistants work in surgical departments in various healthcare facilities such as hospitals.

Solid education

The training in the surgical assistant consists of at least 1,100 hours, with at least half being practical and at least a third being theoretical. The training takes place at a school for medical assistant professions or in a course for surgical assistants.

Persons who had the professional title of surgical assistant at the time the new Medical Assistant Professions Act (MABG) came into force are now entitled to use the professional title of surgical assistant.
