Suicide: red flags

To be able to help people at risk of suicide, it is important to recognize the warning signs of suicidality. These signs could indicate that someone is thinking or planning to kill themselves.

Important to know: Asking the person concerned about thoughts of suicide will not bring them to the idea of killing themselves. Don't hesitate to get help.

Warning signs and signs of suicide risk

The person in question…

  • is in an acute psychological crisis or appears hopeless and desperate.
  • makes direct (eg “I am going to kill”) or indirect (eg “I don't want anymore”, “Everything is pointless”, generous gifts) announcements of suicide.
  • withdraws more and more and breaks off contact with friends, family members or other close people.
  • seems very depressed and always expresses himself pessimistic and hopeless.
  • loses interest in previous hobbies.
  • Suddenly no longer cares about cherished things and gives away her belongings and pets.
  • suffers from insomnia and loss of appetite.
  • has difficulty concentrating and as a result has increasing problems in school / in training / at work.
  • speaks very often about death and is increasingly concerned with suicide-related issues.
  • appears more relaxed after thoughts of suicide have been expressed, although nothing has changed in the life situation.
  • hoarding pills, getting a gun, or suddenly taking out life insurance.
  • shows careless or self-damaging behavior (e.g. risky driving) or injures himself.

If any of the warning signals listed do occur, this does not have to be an indication of a specific suicide risk. However, it is important to clarify any suicidality and, if necessary, to get help immediately. Only through a conversation can it be clarified whether there is actually an acute risk. It is also possible for relatives to get professional help.
