Travel vaccinations

Many infectious diseases that only rarely occur in Austria are widespread in other countries. Travel vaccinations are aimed at protecting travelers from dangerous infectious diseases. Which vaccinations and preventive measures are useful or necessary in individual cases should be clarified with a doctor several weeks before departure. One of the deciding factors is not only which country but also which region the trip should go to and which travel activities are planned.

Different vaccinations are recommended depending on the travel destination. Different criteria play a role, for example:

  • Destination and time (weather and season on site),
  • Current epidemiology (frequency with which a disease occurs in the destination country),
  • Travel time,
  • Travel style (backpacker or "all-inclusive" traveler),
  • Age of the traveler,
  • Contraindications to vaccinations.

Note For detailed information, see Travel Medicine.

You can find out which specific health risks have to be observed in certain countries in the respective country information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (item health).

Vaccinations before long-distance travel

Travel vaccinations are divided into three categories:

  • Routine vaccinations: they are recommended regardless of a trip (according to the Austrian vaccination plan),
  • Mandatory vaccinations: these vaccinations must be given before entering a country (the country makes vaccinations compulsory for entry),
  • Recommended Travel Vaccinations : Vaccinations recommended as protection against illnesses that travel may expose you to.

Note The yellow fever vaccination is compulsory for entry into yellow fever countries (e.g. West and Central Africa). Here you will find detailed information about the yellow fever vaccination.

International vaccination certificate

The international vaccination certificate is used for documentation in international travel. The Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection provides the Austrian population with vaccination records free of charge; these are available from your doctor and pharmacy.

Whom can I ask?

Advice: Vaccinations should be started about six weeks before departure, as some vaccines have to be administered several times before protection occurs. Your doctor or the nearest institute or ordination for travel and / or tropical medicine will inform you about all vaccinations that are important for your holiday destination.

The following agencies offer travel vaccinations:

Yellow fever vaccination centers

Note The yellow fever vaccination may only be carried out at official vaccination centers approved by the Ministry of Health, as only the designated vaccination centers can document and confirm the vaccination in the international vaccination pass of the World Health Organization (WHO).

How are the costs going to be covered?

The cost of vaccinations that are recommended for private trips abroad is borne by the traveler. The cost of vaccinations that are recommended for business trips abroad is borne by the employer.
