Children's rehab in Austria

Not only adults need to get fit for everyday life again after a serious illness. Children also need rehabilitative support after a serious illness or an accident. So far, sick children have either been cared for together with adults for rehabilitation or had to move to Germany, as there were no rehabilitation places specially designed for children and adolescents in Austria. However, rehabilitation for children and adolescents differs in many ways from rehabilitation for adults. The first children's rehabilitation centers have also been in operation in Austria since 2016.

Rehabilitation centers for children

Around 5,000 children and young people in Austria need inpatient rehabilitation because of a serious illness or disability. In the current rehabilitation plan, the need for children's rehabilitation centers for the whole of Austria is divided into four supply regions, in which a total of 343 beds for children and adolescents are provided for eleven indications and 50 beds for relatives in the oncology field. In addition to the rehabilitation of children and adolescents, in which physical as well as psychological and social aspects are to be taken into account, young patients are also given the opportunity to attend school and spend their free time.

Supply zone south

  • Gratwein-Straßengel (Styria): mobilizing indications
  • Wildbad Einöd (Styria): cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation with 28 beds and psychosocial rehabilitation with 24 beds.

Supply zone north

Upper Austria-Salzburg: 109 beds for children and adolescents and 50 for families of young cancer patients.

  • Rohrbach (Upper Austria): Children's rehab with 77 beds with the indications of pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular, psychosocial and mobilizing rehabilitation.
  • St. Veit im Pongau (Salzburg): for young cancer patients as well as the metabolism and digestive system indication with 32 beds and 50 beds for family-oriented aftercare in oncology

Supply zone east

Bad Erlach (Lower Austria): In addition to 114 beds, 67 in mobilizing and 47 in psychosocial rehabilitation for children and adolescents up to 18 years of age, 77 beds are being set up for accompanying persons. The children's center in Bad Erlach is due to open in spring 2019

West supply zone

Wiesing (Tyrol): mobilizing rehabilitation with 22 beds and psychosocial rehabilitation with 15 beds. There are also 22 beds for accompanying persons

Note Only those child rehabilitation facilities are listed that have been awarded the contract in the course of the award procedure and thus have a contractual relationship with the main association.

Who is entitled to child and youth rehabilitation?

In principle, children and adolescents up to the age of 18 have the option of rehabilitation in a children and youth rehabilitation center. The prerequisite is a medical report that considers rehabilitation in a specialized center to be useful.

How long is the rehabilitation period?

The duration of medical rehabilitation depends on the rehabilitation goals pursued. In the case of children and adolescents - compared to adults - age and development-specific aspects must be taken into account in addition to medical aspects when determining the duration of rehabilitation. An inpatient rehabilitation stay generally lasts three weeks, depending on the indication. In some cases, an extension may be necessary for medical reasons.

Can accompanying persons be included?

Parents or caregivers should be included in the rehabilitation, as their cooperation can usually achieve the rehabilitation goals more quickly. Especially with younger children, it is usually necessary to take in an accompanying person for the duration of the rehabilitation stay. In addition, siblings can be admitted in individual cases, for example if the mother is breastfeeding. For the little cancer patients, it is planned that the whole family can come along.

Note Accompanying persons do not receive any medical treatment. However, they will be included in training courses on how to better deal with the illness of young patients in order to implement what they have learned in everyday life.

When is rehabilitation for children and adolescents not possible?

The absolute contraindications include:

  • acute danger to oneself or others
  • decompensated illnesses with severe functional impairments of various organ systems (e.g. heart, kidney and liver insufficiency, acute paraplegic syndrome, untreated hormonal imbalances, acute mental disorders), for which the rehabilitation facility does not have sufficient pediatric expertise
  • serious infectious diseases and acute inflammatory processes
  • Compulsory ventilation

If the following conditions, situations and illnesses exist, the individual assessment of the rehabilitation prognosis or the individual assessment of the risk constellation by the social insurance agency is required, if necessary in coordination with the facility:

  • insufficient diagnostic work-up
  • Dialysis patients (close cooperation between the person undergoing rehabilitation, the cost bearer, the rehabilitation facility and the dialysis ward)
  • pronounced immunodeficiency
  • Drug addiction and alcohol disease in adolescents
  • Teenage pregnancy

What should be considered when submitting an application?

In order to receive medical rehabilitation services for children and adolescents, those affected must submit a rehabilitation application for children and adolescents. The completed application form for the rehabilitation of children and adolescents, including the supplement for family-oriented rehabilitation, must be submitted to the child's or adolescent's health insurance provider responsible for approval.

Note However, it is possible to submit applications to any social insurance agency - even if another insurance agency is actually responsible. In this case, the application will be forwarded to the responsible insurance provider ("Allsparenservice").

How are the costs going to be covered?

If the application for rehabilitation in a child and youth rehabilitation center is approved by the social insurance agency, the costs will be covered - also for accompanying persons.
