Prostheses: How is the aftercare carried out?

After the operation, follow-up treatment takes place from physiotherapy. The duration of the hospital stay varies greatly depending on the healing process and concomitant diseases. This is usually followed by inpatient rehabilitation.

The first time in the hospital

After the procedure, movement training as part of physiotherapy is carried out as soon as possible and accompanied by pain therapy.

After a joint endoprosthesis has been placed in the area of the hips or legs, the patient is provided with a walking aid (eg crutches) for the first time after the operation. After surgery without complications, discharge from the hospital is usually possible one to ten days after the operation, depending on the joint replacement.

Physiotherapy is also initiated immediately after an amputation and fitting of a transition prosthesis. The duration of the hospital stay varies greatly depending on the healing process and concomitant diseases.

The first time after discharge

For the time after discharge, an assistant should be organized to take care of the household or the personal hygiene. In addition, certain aids (e.g. shower chair, toilet seat elevation) should be available. Your supervising specialist doctor or your physiotherapist can advise you on which aids you will need at home after the operation. Older, frail people who live at home can temporarily visit a remobilization center or short-term care facility after they are released from hospital.

Note If the healing process is good, the sutures or staples are removed ten to 15 days after the operation. A water-repellent plaster must be used while showering until the wound has healed. Bath tubs are not possible.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation

After discharge, the patient receives outpatient physiotherapy. Depending on the affected joint or body part and the patient's state of health, exercise therapy is also carried out a few weeks after the operation as part of a rehabilitation stay.

Prostheses and work

The duration of the sick leave when installing a prosthesis depends, among other things, on the type of prosthesis or the joint replacement and the healing process. Usually work can be resumed two to three months after the operation. Some work should no longer be carried out after the operation (e.g. work involving kneeling activities after a knee replacement). In these cases a change of job can be useful. For more information, see Profession: Advice & Help.

Sports suitable for prosthesis wearers

After placing an endoprosthesis, you should do sports that are gentle on the joints (e.g. swimming, cycling or walking). Sports in which jerky movements are performed or the risk of injury is increased (e.g. jogging, martial arts or tennis) should be avoided. With exoprostheses, special sports prostheses can be adapted for a wide variety of sports.
