homeopathy

Homeopathic medicine sees itself as a medical form of therapy with individual drugs that are prescribed in potentised form - diluted and shaken - according to the so-called principle of similarity. It is an individual regulation therapy which, taking into account physical, mental, spiritual, constitutional, biographical, social and environmental factors, is understood as medicine of the person in its entirety.

What is the background?

In 1796 the founder of homeopathy, the doctor, pharmacist and chemist Dr. med. habil. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), his fundamental thoughts on a new healing method. In 1810 he published his Organon der Heilkunst. Homeopathy therefore follows three basic principles:

1. Similarity rule

A remedy cures symptoms in sick people that are similar to those it causes in healthy people. According to this principle, a substance that causes certain symptoms can also help to cure these symptoms. [1]

2. Homeopathic drug testing according to Hahnemann

Homeopathic medicinal products are used on healthy people to observe their effects. The following sources are used to develop and research the drug picture of a drug:

  • Symptoms of drug proving: These are the symptoms that a healthy person develops while taking the potentiated drug in a controlled manner.
  • Symptoms of toxicology: These are the symptoms that occurred when the undiluted, non-potentiated substance was taken and are known to medicine from experience.
  • Findings from healed patients.

3. Potentiation

The medicinal products used in classical homeopathic medicine give the organism the stimulus for healing (regulation) according to the stimulus-response principle. Because of the high toxicity of many starting substances, these are potentiated (diluted and shaken) according to precisely defined rules. Homeopathic medicines are made from animal, vegetable and mineral raw materials.

How does the method work?

In order to find out the characteristic features of a person, a detailed anamnesis, usually at least about one hour, is carried out at the beginning of the homeopathic treatment. In order to find the right remedy, the entire person is recorded with all his personal circumstances, characteristics and reaction abilities. This also includes eating and drinking habits, sleeping conditions, fears, reactions to joy, grief, anger, weather, etc. This is followed by the clinical examination of the patient, the precise diagnostic clarification of the disease, the clinical follow-up as well as the medical consultation and a comprehensive education of the patient about treatment options as well as indications, limits, possibilities and course of a homeopathic therapy.

What areas of application are there?

According to its proponents, homeopathy can help wherever processes can be regulated, for example in the case of psycho-vegetative disorders such as anxiety, depression or sleep disorders, concentration difficulties (including ADHD). In addition, homeopaths report good results in the following situations, among others:

  • functional diseases such as migraines or menstrual disorders,
  • allergic diseases such as pollen allergy or eczema,
  • inflammatory diseases such as recurrent infections, bladder infections, infections of the sinuses,
  • Relieving side effects of chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

The decision can also be made in favor of combination therapy, ie methods of conventional medicine are supported by homeopathy.

What are the limits of homeopathy?

Like any other medicine, homeopathy has its limits. Destroyed or missing items cannot be replaced by homeopathic medicines, such as the lack of insulin in diabetes. Severed nerve tracts must continue to be treated surgically as far as possible. Broken bones and the like must continue to be treated or operated on conventionally. Here, however, homeopathy can - according to its proponents - support the healing process.

What evidence is there?

Medizin-Transparent (www.medizin-transparent.at) comes to the following assessment (as of November 2016): The summarized results of previous studies show that there are no diseases or complaints for which homeopathy is known to help better than a dummy drug (placebo).

Whom can I ask?

In Austria, homeopathic treatment is reserved for doctors. Following the classic medical training, homeopaths have completed several years of medical training (theory and practice). The completion of the basic training is recognized by the diploma homeopathy of the Austrian Medical Association.

How are the costs going to be covered?

The costs for complementary medical treatments are usually not covered by the health insurance carriers and in a few cases with the approval of the chief physician. In the spa and rehabilitation sector, at least partial cost coverage is provided for individual services. In any case, it is worth checking with the responsible health insurance company.
