Health professions: education and training
Training in health professions can take place in very different ways. They all have one thing in common - the graduates have acquired in-depth knowledge of the health and medically relevant subject areas and are competent in the exercise of their health profession.
Depending on the health profession, the training takes place at universities of applied sciences, schools for health and nursing (until the end of 2023) or universities and can take up to several years.

Training paths for various health professions
- Diploma course (master’s course) at a medical or veterinary university, several years of training,
- Diploma or bachelor's and master's degree at a university, several years of training,
- Bachelor courses at universities of applied sciences, several years of training,
- special (technical) schools such as for general or psychiatric health and nursing care, one to multi-year training.
Professional practice
In many health professions, after completing the training mentioned above, in order to obtain the professional qualification and title, professional practice is also required. For example, to qualify as a pharmacist, a one-year pharmacy service with a final exam must be completed, known as the “aspirant year”.
Further education and training
Members of the health professions have to regularly adapt their competencies to scientific knowledge and social changes. In other words, they are legally obliged to keep up-to-date with the latest findings and developments in job-related areas (mandatory training).
Recognition of foreign professional qualifications
The practice of health professions in Austria is linked to a professional qualification.
In the case of a qualification acquired outside of Austria, recognition by the competent Austrian authorities is required before practicing the profession. Without recognition, both practitioners and those who use these persons for a corresponding activity commit an administrative offense, threatened with a fine, in addition to any civil and criminal liability consequences.
The EU Directive 2013/55 / EU amending Directive 2005/36 / EC, which came into force on January 18, 2016, includes new recognition mechanisms and instruments for health professionals within the European Union and the European Economic Area as well to facilitate mobility for Switzerland. This includes, for example, a single point of contact and a European professional card.
