What is the vaccination certificate used for?
The vaccination record gives a quick overview of which vaccinations are already in place and which vaccinations are still pending. The experts of the National Vaccination Board recommend a range of vaccinations for infants and young children. Since many of these recommended vaccinations take place in several partial vaccinations, it is often difficult for parents to keep track of which vaccinations are still pending or when the next vaccination appointment is due. Even in an emergency, for example if an acute tetanus infection is suspected after an injury, it is important for the attending physician to quickly know what vaccination protection is in place.
The vaccination pass also corresponds to the WHO regulations for the documentation of yellow fever vaccinations and can therefore be used for those countries that require proof of a yellow fever vaccination upon entry.
Note On the decision of the Federal Target Control Commission, ELGA GmbH was entrusted with the implementation of the piloting of the electronic vaccination pass (e-vaccination pass) in June 2018. The e-vaccination pass is to be tested as part of the pilot project, together with the state medical directorates and selected resident doctors. In 2020 the pilot phase of the e-vaccination pass will take place in Lower Austria, Styria and Vienna. You can find detailed information under Electronic Vaccination Pass (ELGA GmbH).
What information does the vaccination certificate contain?
All vaccinations carried out are noted in the vaccination record by the treating doctor. This document has been created in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and, due to its standardized design, is also valid abroad.
The following information is noted in the vaccination certificate:
- Surname
- address
- Date of birth
- Social security number
If the doctor carries out a vaccination, the following data is entered in the vaccination pass:
- Date of vaccination
- Trade name of the vaccine and the so-called batch number
- Signature and stamp of the vaccination doctor
Whom can I ask?
The vaccination pass is free of charge and is issued by the pediatrician or, in adulthood, by the family doctor as part of the mother-child pass examinations.
Note The Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection provides the Austrian population with vaccination cards free of charge. Private individuals can obtain a vaccination certificate from their family doctor, pharmacy or public vaccination center.
Doctors can order vaccination certificates directly from the brochure service of the Federal Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection.
