The mother-child pass at a glance
The mother-child pass is used for preventive health care for pregnant women, babies and toddlers up to the age of five. The examinations provided for in the mother-child pass program are an opportunity for the early detection and timely treatment of diseases as well as for monitoring the child's level of development. Since its introduction in 1974, the mother-child pass program has been continuously developed and adapted to the state of medical science and experience.

The investigation program
The examination program is regulated in the current version of the Mother-Child-Pass-Ordinance 2002. It includes five gynecological examinations before the birth. During these five appointments, two blood tests (up to 16 weeks and 25-28 weeks) and three ultrasound examinations are carried out. From birth, ten examinations of the child including an orthopedic, an ear, nose and throat examination and two eye examinations are on the program. Since November 2012 there is also the possibility of a midwifery consultation in the 18th-22nd Week of pregnancy to take.
Note In order to receive the full childcare allowance, the first ten mother-child pass examinations must be submitted to the responsible social insurance agency. If this proof is missing, the childcare allowance will be reduced. In addition to the ten mandatory examinations mentioned, the mother-child pass offers further free preventive examinations up to the child's 62nd month (approx.
When and from whom will I receive the mother-child pass?
After the doctor has established a pregnancy, the pregnant woman receives the mother-child pass. Women who are not insured are also entitled to the mother-child pass. The prerequisite for this is residence in Austria.

Specialist in gynecology and obstetrics
But also with the following doctors or institutions, if they carry out mother-child pass examinations:
- Specialist in general medicine,
- in the specialist outpatient clinics of the Austrian Health Insurance Fund,
- in the outpatient departments of hospitals with obstetrical departments and
- in the pregnancy and family counseling centers.
Who does the examinations during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, mother-child pass examinations are carried out by the following doctors and institutions:
- General Practitioner,
- Resident specialist in gynecology and obstetrics,
- Specialized outpatient departments for gynecology and obstetrics of the health insurance companies,
- Outpatient departments for gynecology and obstetrics in hospitals as well
- Family advice centers with a focus on pregnancy advice.
Who will do the examination of the child?
The first point of contact for the child's examinations is your pediatrician. The examinations can also be carried out by general practitioners, in the specialist outpatient clinics for paediatrics and by doctors in the mother and parent counseling centers.
- The orthopedic examination is carried out by general practitioners, specialists in paediatrics and adolescent medicine, specialists in orthopedics and in specialist outpatient clinics for paediatrics.
- The ENT examination is carried out by general practitioners, specialists in paediatrics and adolescents, as well as specialists in ear, nose and throat medicine.
- The eye examination in the 10th to 14th month of life of the child is carried out by general practitioners, specialists in paediatrics, specialists in ophthalmology and optometry as well as in specialist outpatient clinics.
- The eye examination in the 22nd to 26th month of life of the child can only be performed by a specialist in ophthalmology and optometry and in the specialist outpatient clinics.
Mother-child pass and stay abroad
Regarding the mother-child passport examinations, it should be noted that these can in principle also be carried out abroad. If there is no entry in the mother-child passport, a medical confirmation is sufficient as proof that the respective examination was carried out.
The examinations can only be recognized for the granting of the full childcare allowance if they correspond exactly to the prescribed Austrian mother-child pass examinations in terms of type, number and time of execution and this is shown accordingly in the medical certificate. Certified translations may have to be submitted.
How are the costs going to be covered?
The mother-child pass examinations can be carried out free of charge by contract doctors of the health insurance carriers.
Uninsured persons are only entitled to the mother-child pass examinations if their center of life in Austria can prove. Uninsured women must, therefore, prior to using a study by the Austrian Health Fund, which is responsible for the town i st, can issue a claim receipt. In the course of this, the center of life in Austria is checked. With this receipt, the respective mother-child pass examinations can be carried out free of charge with a contract doctor of the health insurance company.
If a doctor of choice carries out the examinations, the costs incurred must first be paid by the patient or the parents themselves. When the fee note and proof of payment are presented, the costs are partly covered by social security. According to legal provisions (§ 131 ASVG), the amount of the reimbursement is 80 percent of the tariff that the health insurance company pays a contract doctor for the same service (deductible 20%).
