This is how burnout is treated

The treatment of burnout syndrome varies from person to person and primarily addresses the following points:

  • Adaptation of the social environment or the work situation: Problems at work and in the social environment (e.g. family) are discussed in the context of psychotherapy. Together with the therapist, ways out or possibilities for change are sought.
  • Psychotherapy: Psychotherapeutic methods are an important component of burnout treatment. In psychotherapy, the problems of the person seeking help are not simply "solved" by the therapist. It is more about accompanying the patient in their development and in the search for a solution or change. In this way, people with mental suffering can understand themselves and learn to help.

  • Health psychological counseling: The aim is to convey knowledge about behavior and health, including health promotion. Coping strategies and solutions to problems can also be developed individually.
  • Clinical-psychological treatment
  • Possible treatment of concomitant illnesses (including psychiatric): If there are concomitant illnesses, these will be treated by the relevant specialist depending on their type and severity.
  • Stress and time management: Living stress-free is hardly possible. In many cases, time management makes it easier to deal with stressful situations. A calendar, for example, but also a diary can help to set priorities. If you are exhausted, the question arises as to where a change can quickly achieve a positive effect or relief. How you deal with stress is also essential to how it affects you. In coaching, health psychological counseling or psychotherapy, for example, assistance can be found in dealing with personal stress factors. You can find more information about stress under Stress & Recovery. With the time management tool you will learn how to manage your time optimally.

  • Relaxation and physical activity: Learning a relaxation technique, which can then also be incorporated into everyday life, is a valuable part of burnout treatment. But physical activity also has a supportive effect, in order to be able to better master the demands of everyday life.
  • Coaching: Coaching is to be understood as companionship and support, which is limited to a certain period of time. The special focus here is on professional role and person. So-called “skills” are developed in short training sequences. Coaching is mainly used for lighter forms.

After a burnout, the integration into the world of work is particularly important, where it is often necessary to find other working time models (professional reintegration management). General information on health and work can be found under the job environment.
